Pharma, biotech and contract research organisations hire physicians to design and monitor trials, review adverse events, own risk management plans and sign off on safety signals. Headcount here dwarfs digital health. Medical monitor and pharmacovigilance roles are structured, well paid and exist at every seniority level, including entry points that do not require prior industry experience.

What the job actually is

  • Act as medical monitor on live trials and adjudicate safety events

  • Good Clinical Practice certification, which is short and free
  • Trial design, endpoints and statistical analysis plans
  • Regulatory safety reporting timelines and formats
  • Writing that survives a regulator reading it

  • Join a trial at your own institution as a site investigator
  • Apply to medical monitor and safety physician roles directly, not through generic boards
