Clinical Informatics
The most direct bridge out of the ward, and the one hospitals pay for.
- Best fit
- Clinicians who already get pulled into EHR committees, build their own order sets, or complain accurately about alerts.
- Time to move
- 6 to 24 months part time inside your current employer
- Indicative pay
- Often a protected time arrangement first, then 180k to 320k USD as a full time CMIO track
Informatics sits between clinicians and the systems they document in. You own order sets, decision support, data quality and the workflow design behind every alert a colleague sees. In the United States it is a recognised subspecialty with fellowship routes, which makes it the cleanest formal exit from full time clinical work. Most people start part time inside their own institution before going full time.
What the job actually is
- Design and retire clinical decision support, and defend the retirements with data
- Own clinical content governance across specialties
- Translate clinical intent into build tickets an analyst team can ship
- Run adoption and safety review after go live
Skills to build
- SQL good enough to answer your own questions
- EHR build literacy, Epic or Cerner certification where offered
- Workflow mapping and time and motion measurement
- Change management with peers who did not ask for the change
Your first ninety days
- Ask to join the CDS or clinical content committee at your site
- Pick one alert with a poor accept rate and rebuild it end to end
- Publish the before and after numbers internally
Proof of work hiring managers ask for
- A measured reduction in alert volume with no safety signal
- An order set you authored that other units adopted
- A quality improvement writeup with a run chart

- Protected time inside your own institution is the cheapest way to test the move without leaving.
