Working in HealthTech

Founding and Early Stage

The highest variance route, and the one with the fewest safety rails.

Best fit
Clinicians with a specific, painful, repeated problem and access to the people who pay to fix it.
Time to move
Nights and weekends until revenue or funding, then a hard cut
Indicative pay
Near zero, then 120k to 200k USD post seed, with equity as the real compensation

Clinician founders have an advantage on problem selection and a disadvantage on distribution. The failure mode is rarely the wrong product. It is a product built for a buyer who does not exist, sold on a cycle longer than the runway. Test the buyer before you leave the ward, and keep clinical sessions until the first contract is signed.

What the job actually is

  • Talk to 50 buyers before writing a line of code
  • Sell the first five contracts personally
  • Decide what evidence you owe the market and when
  • Hire people better than you at the things you are worst at

Skills to build

  • Enterprise sales into hospitals and payers
  • Fundraising narrative and financial modelling
  • Regulatory pathway selection early, not late
  • Ruthless scope control

Your first ninety days

  • Write the problem down in one page and show it to ten buyers
  • Get one letter of intent before building anything
  • Map the regulatory pathway and its cost

Proof of work hiring managers ask for

  • Signed letters of intent or a paying pilot
  • A working prototype in front of real users
  • A clear, honest evidence roadmap

Titles and who hires

Common titles: Founder, Founding Clinical Officer, Chief Medical Officer, seed stage.

Typical employers: Yourself, Venture studios, Accelerators, Founding teams looking for a clinical cofounder.

Key signals

  • Clinician founders win on problem selection and lose on distribution, so hire for distribution first.
  • A signed pilot beats a finished product in every early fundraising conversation.
  • Keep one clinical session. It is cheap insurance and it keeps your problem statement current.
